The Story Behind The Small Stay
Small spaces.
Big adventures await.
We believe a small stay should never feel like a lesser experience. It should feel like a more personal one.
A little place can leave a lasting impression.
A Personal Perspective
I’ve always believed that little places can do remarkable things.
I’m K M Gallagher, founder of The Small Stay. My appreciation for smaller properties comes from years of personal experience marketing and renting homes in communities with very different personalities.
From East Boothbay Harbor and Cape Elizabeth, Maine, to Aspen and Longmont, Colorado, and Kemah, Texas, I’ve had the opportunity to introduce travelers to distinctive places and the communities surrounding them. I’ve also independently marketed and sold a home in Ocean Point, Maine.
One of those experiences was successfully renting a 750-square-foot summer log cabin. It reinforced something I’ve long believed: a small property doesn’t need extraordinary square footage to offer an extraordinary sense of place.
Each property had something different to offer. And each deserved to be presented for what made it special, rather than compared to a larger or more expensive home.
What We Believe
Small doesn’t
mean skimping.
Comfort matters. Cleanliness matters. Thoughtful furnishings, good lighting, practical amenities and a welcoming arrival all matter.
But creating a memorable rental doesn’t require a designer kitchen, the latest appliance brand or an expensive renovation.
It begins by recognizing what a property already has going for it — and making thoughtful choices that bring those qualities forward.
Thoughtful choices over expensive extras.
The Experience of Place
A rental should feel like somewhere.
Not just anywhere.
Travel is an opportunity to experience a different rhythm of life. A memorable rental should help guests feel connected to the landscape, the community and the character of their destination.
01 / The Land
Rooted in Its Setting
A wooded path, coastal breeze, mountain view or quiet garden can become part of the guest experience. The surroundings aren’t incidental. They’re part of the story.
02 / The Community
A Local Connection
A favorite bakery, a neighborhood walk, local craftsmanship or a nearby trail invites guests to experience the destination rather than simply sleep there.
03 / The Feeling
A Place to Belong
A comfortable chair, a quiet reading corner and thoughtful little comforts help guests settle in, relax and feel genuinely welcomed.
The Art of Bringing Out Character
Every little place has a personality.
Sometimes it’s immediately obvious. Sometimes it’s waiting to be discovered in an original detail, a room full of natural light, a small porch or the story behind the property.
Our work is to find that individuality and bring it to life through thoughtful positioning, storytelling, photography direction and a guest experience that feels authentic to the property.
We don’t believe every cottage needs to look alike. We believe each should become the best version of itself.
Your place. Its character. Its story.
Between Tides · Ocean Point, Maine
Our Own Little Place
Practicing what we believe.
Today I’m developing Between Tides, a carriage-house retreat at Ocean Point, Maine, with approximately 690 square feet of guest accommodation above an existing garage.
Its appeal isn’t a grand entrance or a sprawling floor plan. It’s the light coming through the upstairs windows, the surrounding trees, the character of coastal Maine and the possibility of a quiet, comfortable retreat.
Between Tides is my own property project and a natural extension of the philosophy behind The Small Stay. Every client property, however, retains its own identity, business information and individual interests.
Simple by Design
Creating a rental shouldn’t feel overwhelming.
You may already have a perfectly lovely space. What you need isn’t necessarily a renovation, an expensive staging plan or a management company taking over every detail.
You may simply need someone to recognize its possibilities, help make smart decisions and bring the whole experience together.
That’s where The Small Stay begins.
Small Spaces. Remarkable Places.
What makes your little place special?
A cozy cabin, an apartment above the garage, a tucked-away cottage or a little retreat with untapped potential. We’d love to hear its story.
